Heavy Weather at Nice n Sleazy's

Lola Lea

On a sold out Saturday night at Sleazy’s in the build up to Christmas, Heavy Weather took to the stage for only their second ever gig. Judging by the sound they produced and the crowd they pulled in, you’d think they’d done hundreds of shows.

From Lacuna headlining King Tut’s to Crowded Flat’s not-so-secret secret show, the final month of 2023 has celebrated everything that’s come so far, but one support act stood out amongst all these events, and we’ll all be keeping our eyes on Heavy Weather throughout 2024.

Fronted by Lewis Harley, belting out proper nostalgic 00’s rock in his Tom Meighan-esque voice and backed up by Grant Herpich on drums, Nathan Sinclair on guitar, and two brothers, Jack and Billy McFaul on guitar and bass respectively. Each member brings a proficiency on their instrument that is unrivaled by many other bands on the scene.

Just one day after the release of their first single, Irish Goodbye, which has already been making the rounds amongst followers of the Scottish DIY scene, their setlist of otherwise unreleased music left every packed in and sweaty audience member with the feeling that they were witnessing the start of something big.

With an eclectic style ranging from shell suits to knitted jumpers, the Livingston five piece turned heads as they took to the stage. Opening with their attention grabbing anthem, “Never Know”, they walloped through a set of classic, unadulterated rock originals. Jack McFaul, as an all-round virtuoso on guitar, and his head-bopping brother on bass, are perfectly attuned with each other. Watching them on stage you can see the years they've spent playing together paying off as they bounce off each and every move that the other makes.

Without a single dud song, they gripped the audience all the way through to their penultimate tune, “Bones”, frontman Lewis roared the question that everyone already had their answer to:  “can you feel it in your bones?” From the bass in your shins to the drums in your chest, this song solidified the high that everyone was feeling.

Closing off with “Irish Goodbye”, Heavy Weather were greeted with rapturous applause and an atmosphere in the air that will undoubtedly signal them becoming the latest addition to Glasgow indie scene roster.

You can see plenty of acoustic sets on Heavy Weather social media, listen to their single on Spotify and with new songs in the works and undoubtedly many gigs to follow, the forecast seems to say that there’s more Heavy Weather on the way.
